What is SSP and How Does it Work?
The Safe and Sound Protocol (SSP) is an evidence-based therapeutic listening intervention designed to help you feel calmer, more connected, and better able to manage life’s challenges. Developed by Dr. Stephen Porges, SSP is rooted in Polyvagal Theory, which focuses on how our nervous system influences our ability to feel safe, connect with others, and respond to stress. I provide a framework for understanding Polyvagal Theory, which gives us a scientific framework that can be applied through physiological, or "bottom-up" therapies, to help change and improve how we feel, think, and connect with others.
The SSP works by using specially filtered music to stimulate the vagus nerve, a key component of the nervous system that plays a role in regulating emotions, social engagement, and physiological states. By gently influencing the way your nervous system responds to the world, SSP helps to reduce stress, improve emotional regulation, and enhance your sense of safety and well-being. By activating your social engagement system, SSP helps to accelerate and enhance therapeutic outcomes. It also supports physiological state regulation, allowing for greater resilience.
The protocol is typically delivered over several sessions, either in person or remotely, and involves listening to calming, specially processed music through headphones. Here’s what you can expect:
Preparation and Safety: Before starting SSP, we’ll assess your readiness and ensure the timing is right. The protocol is designed to meet you where you are, so we’ll adjust the pace as needed to ensure it feels supportive and safe.
Listening Sessions: During each session, you’ll listen to the SSP music, which is designed to gently engage your nervous system. The sessions are typically short, ranging from 30 minutes to an hour, and can be done in a quiet, comfortable environment.
Integration and Support: Between and after sessions, we’ll focus on helping you integrate the benefits of SSP into your daily life. You might notice shifts in how you respond to stress, interact with others, or manage emotions. We’ll provide tools and guidance to support these changes.
Clients often experience a wide range of benefits from SSP, including:
Reduced stress and anxiety: By calming your nervous system, SSP can help you feel more grounded and less reactive to triggers.
Improved emotional regulation: SSP enhances your ability to manage emotions, leading to a greater sense of balance and resilience.
Enhanced social connection: By fostering a sense of safety, SSP can make it easier to build and maintain meaningful relationships.
Support for trauma recovery: SSP can be a powerful tool for individuals working through trauma, helping to reset the nervous system and promote healing.
Better focus and attention: Many clients report improved concentration and clarity as their nervous system becomes more regulated.
Whether you’re looking to reduce anxiety, recover from trauma, or simply feel more connected to yourself and others, SSP is a gentle yet transformative approach that supports your journey to well-being.
