Understanding SSP

The Safe and Sound Protocol (SSP) is an evidence-based listening approach designed to help you feel calmer, more connected, and better able to manage life’s challenges. Developed by Dr. Stephen Porges, SSP is rooted in Polyvagal Theory, which helps explain how our nervous system influences our ability to feel safe, connect with others, and respond to stress.

Part of this process includes understanding how your nervous system responds to safety, stress, and connection—so your experiences begin to make more sense at a deeper level. Together, we’ll map your nervous system patterns and tailor the process in a way that aligns with your needs and capacity.

SSP uses specially filtered music to stimulate the vagus nerve—the part of your nervous system involved in safety, connection, and emotional regulation. By gently influencing how your system responds to the world, SSP can help reduce stress, improve emotional regulation, and support a greater sense of safety and well-being. It also supports physiological state regulation, allowing for greater resilience—reducing feelings of overstimulation.

We begin by building a foundation together—getting to know your nervous system and identifying areas for growth at a pace that feels supportive. From there, listening often happens on your own time, with ongoing therapist support and check-ins to guide the process and make adjustments as needed. Here’s what you can expect:

  1. Preparation and Safety: Before starting SSP, we’ll assess your readiness and ensure the timing feels right for your system. The protocol is designed to meet you where you are, so we’ll adjust the pace as needed to ensure it feels supportive and safe.

  2. Listening Sessions: During each session, you’ll listen to the SSP music, which is designed to gently engage your nervous system. The listening sessions are typically short, ranging from just a few minutes up to 30 minutes, and can be done on your own in a quiet, comfortable environment.

  3. Integration and Support: Between and after sessions, we’ll focus on helping you integrate the benefits of SSP into your daily life. You might notice shifts in how you respond to stress, interact with others, your capacity for regulation, or manage emotions. We’ll provide tools and guidance to support these changes through daily check in's with your therapist about your experience.
