What is CRAFT?

Community Reinforcement and Family Training (CRAFT) is an evidence-based approach designed to support individuals who have a loved one struggling with substance use.

Rather than focusing on confrontation or ultimatums, CRAFT helps you learn practical, compassionate strategies to improve communication, set healthy boundaries, and take care of your own wellbeing.

Through this approach, you’ll learn ways to positively influence your loved one’s behavior while also creating meaningful changes in your own life. It focuses on understanding patterns, reinforcing healthier behaviors, and reducing patterns that may unintentionally reinforce substance use.

CRAFT is empowering because it gives you tools you can use right away—whether your loved one is ready for change or not. It also helps you feel more confident, supported, and less alone in a situation that can often feel overwhelming and isolating.

Who is CRAFT for?

CRAFT may be a good fit if:

  • You have a loved one struggling with substance use

  • You want to support them without constant conflict or disconnection

  • You’re feeling overwhelmed, stuck, or unsure what to do next

  • You want practical tools—not just advice

  • You’re ready to take care of yourself, even if your loved one isn’t ready for change

How CRAFT helps

Through CRAFT, you can begin to:

  • Communicate more effectively and reduce conflict

  • Set and maintain healthier boundaries

  • Respond to substance use in ways that support change

  • Strengthen your own wellbeing and sense of stability

  • Feel more confident in how you show up in the relationship

The focus is not on controlling your loved one—but on helping you feel more grounded, empowered, and supported in how you respond.

You can begin to approach this differently—with support.
